If you had the chance, what would you ask Team USA’s Monica Abbott?

March 7, 2011

Monica Abbott will be stopping by the Softball Sales offices this Tuesday, and she has agreed to sit down for a quick video interview with us.

Monica AbbottBut rather than make up all of the questions ourselves, we want to know what you want to know.

If you got a chance to meet Monica — the Team USA star and one of the most dominant pitchers in the history of college softball — what would you ask her?

Would it be something like “What was it like playing in the Olympics?” Or would you ask something along the lines of “What’s the best piece of advice to give a young softball player starting out?”

We’ll take some of the questions that readers have submitted, and we’ll post a video with her answers later this week.

You can post your question in the comments section below or on our Facebook page. You can take a look at her impressive list of career accomplishments and stats here.

Video: Angela Tincher’s no-hitter against Team USA

September 3, 2010

This video comes from March 2008.

Preparing for the Beijing Olympics, the US Women’s National Team was completing a round of exhibition games against college softball teams. In this particular game, Team USA paid a visit to Virginia Tech and an up-and-coming pitcher named Angela Tincher.

Tincher actually tried out for the Women’s National Team shortly before the game, and she didn’t make the cut.

There’s little doubt that the no-hitter she threw — snapping the Team USA’s 185 pre-Olympic winning streak — made coaches think twice about cutting her again.

She currently plays for the Women’s Futures National Team.

The video is in several parts. Here they are:

Jennie Finch announces her retirement

July 21, 2010

Her career spanned a decade. Along the way, Jennie Finch amassed a king’s ransom of MVP trophies, medals, championships and other hardware.

Finch won gold in Athens and silver in Beijing. She is a three-time World Cup Champion, three time World Champion and a two-time Pan American Champion. She is a two-time Honda Award winner — given to the top player in college softball — and the reigning USA Softball player of the year.

On Tuesday, Finch announced that her next tournament will be her last.

The 29-year-old softball phenom will retire at the conclusion of the 2010 KFC World Cup of Softball, which begins this Thursday in Oklahoma City. The tournament will be broadcast live on the ESPN family of networks.

Finch, hailed by Time magazine as the most famous softball player in history, will cap off a stellar career. The three-time All-American re-wrote recordbooks at Arizona, putting together a thus-far untouchable 60-game win streak in the circle. She joined the US Women’s National Team at 19, and she went on to help Team USA win a laundry list of tournaments.

At the media day for the 2010 World Cup of Softball, Finch said she plans to stay involved in the sport off the field. But she’s hanging up her cleats for good.

“Hopefully I will continue to be involved with the development of the sport in some way — just not in uniform,” she said. “USA Softball will always be part of me and I plan to work in proving more opportunities in the future.”
