Thursday trivia: Run crosses before third out… What’s the call?

August 19, 2010

It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for trivia.

The way we play is simple. We give you a scenario from a softball game. You tell us what call the umpire should make — if the umpire should make a call at all.

Here’s this week’s question:

Two outs, runners on first and third. The batter grounds the ball to second.

Instead of stepping on second for the easy out, the second baseman tries to run down the runner at first. The runner on third makes it home before the runner that started on first is tagged out.

What’s the call?

Thursday trivia: Collision in the basepath… What’s the call?

August 12, 2010

It’s Thursday, which means it’s time for our weekly softball rules trivia question.

Here’s how it works: We’ll give you a game scenario. You tell us what call the umpire should make, if the umpire should make a call it all.

Without further ado, here it is.

Runner on third; offense tries a squeeze play. The batter places a bunt on the third base line (oops!) and the runner gets caught in a rundown.

The runner heads back to third and the third baseman steps into the baseline to take the throw from the catcher.

The catcher throws too high, the ball winds up in the outfield and before she has time to turn and chase it down, the runner crashes into the third baseman. What’s the call?

Thursday trivia: Dropping the ball after a collision… What’s the call?

August 5, 2010

It’s that time again. It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for our weekly softball trivia question.

How does it work?

It’s simple. We give you a scenario from a softball game. You tell us what call the umpire should make, if the umpire should make a call at all.

Here’s this week’s scenario:

With a runner on second, the batter hits a deep pop up. The left fielder gets a running start at it and snags the ball before it hits the ground.

Not looking where she’s going, she keeps running and smacks right into the center fielder.

She drops the ball. What’s the call?
